The themes of my work are the everyday and the familiar. What is familiar to me, however, could be new to the viewer. It could also be revelatory or something previously overlooked. It is the viewers’ varied responses to and interpretations of images, which makes photography interesting.
The current work also takes the familiar as its theme. The person depicted in these images is the owner of a café in Tokyo. I photograph this person because I am attracted to her as a person and find her endearing. The time that I spend with her is precious and the photographs I make of her are important records of our encounters. In shooting this person, it occurred to me that the photograph’s documentary function might be its most important.
